Welcome to Harpenden u3a
Harpenden u3a was founded 40 years ago, one of the very first u3as. Now there are over 1,050 throughout the country and around 400,000 members.
Harpenden u3a is a self-help group for people no longer in full time employment. There is no lower age limit. It offers the opportunity to pursue learning for sheer enjoyment and is a self-funded educational charity.
We offer you the chance to:
- Enjoy learning, just for the joy of it – no exams!
- Take part in activities that benefit the mind or body
- Share your knowledge, hobbies or skills – or learn new ones
- Meet with like-minded people and make new friends.
We are a lively and friendly group offering a wide range of activities, whether at our general meetings or in our 30+ interest groups. We have around 250 members.

How We Work
We hold two general meetings each month in the Abbeyfield Hall (in the Harpenden Trust Halls above the Co-Op in Southdown). One is with a paid speaker, and the other is a Members Meeting with a range of topics often given by members, but also by some outside speakers. Refreshments are provided at the conclusion of these talks.
We also arrange outings to places of interest. Please look at our Events page to see the up-and-coming meetings etc. All members receive a monthly newsletter. Then, of course, there are our……..
Interest Groups
Small, informal and friendly Interest Groups are an integral part of the u3a experience and members are entitled to join any group in which they are interested. With over 20 to choose from there is something for everyone – from Art Appreciation to Walking, from Singing to Scrabble and from History to Spanish Conversation, to name a few. They meet either in members’ houses or in a small hired room. Please look at the list of our groups on the Groups Page of this website. Our list of groups is constantly growing and we are always open to new suggestions.
Do come and try us out. You are welcome to two visits (either to a general meeting or an interest group) before you join. Annual Membership is only £18 a year although some groups need to make a small charge to cover the cost of hiring a room.
For a general query you can contact the Chairman, Roger Thompson by phone: 01582 620811. Or you can send a message to the Chairman, Membership Secretary or Website Editor via the 'Contact' page.
